2.3. Resolving Device Driver Errors

Other than a system Stop error, device drivers might fail to load for a number of reasons:

  • Version: The version of the driver might not be compatible with the OS version.

  • Configuration: The driver could be misconfigured, and some settings require changing.

  • Incompatibility: The driver might not be compatible with some other driver or application running on the system.

In most cases, the startup error for the driver will be listed in the Event Viewer error logs. Open Event Viewer from StartControl PanelAdministrative ToolsEvent Viewer; then click one of the three log files to view the error logs. After locating the error in Event Viewer, you may use other OS tools, such as Device Manager, to correct the problem. Typically, the fix for these issues involves a visit to the vendor's Web site and downloading the latest version of the driver or reviewing the vendor knowledge base for a fix to the compatibility problem. In rare cases, it might mean changing to a different version of the device, possibly from a different manufacturer.
