4.3. Getting a Handle on Diagnostic Utilities

To figure out what is wrong with a faulty computer, you need to first find out everything it is doing, both right and wrong. The tools in the following sections are designed to provide you with information on a variety of areas of your computer.

4.3.1. The System Information tool

The System Information tool (msinfo32.exe) is available in Windows 2000 and Windows XP. This tool was designed to provide information about as many components in the OS as possible. Figure 4-14 should give you a good feel for the type of information that is available within this tool. If it's part of the OS, the System Information tool can give you information about it.

To open the System Information tool, choose StartAll ProgramsAccessoriesSystem ToolsSystem Information Tools.
