Part II. The Three Stages of Intellectual Capital Management

Part Two presents the new discipline of knowledge management as the first stage of comprehensive intellectual capital management, where the knowledge resources are obtained, sustained, and managed for value creation. Part Two then proceeds with presenting the disciplines of innovation and IP management as the subsequent stages for value extraction and maximization, respectively. Each of the management stages is presented in a way that outlines the changes that are required at both the strategic and operational levels to put in place the necessary strategic objectives, structure, culture, practices, systems, and tools for the management of IC at that stage.

In addition to the real-life examples used throughout the book, Part Two also includes three case studies to illustrate as we go along how ICM can be effectively implemented at the various stages. chapter 6 presents the U.S. Navy's model of knowledge management and examines the changes the Navy went through, based on the framework outlined in chapter 5, to implement knowledge management successfully. chapter 9 also uses the frameworks outlined in Chapters 5, 7, and 8 to illustrate the comprehensive systems that both Skandia AFS and Dow Chemical Company have developed to manage their IC across the whole organization and through the various management stages.
