Chapter 9

Design and Development of a Model for Generating and Exploiting Annotation in the Context of Economic Intelligence1

9.1. Introduction

The contribution of this chapter aims at the design and development of an annotation model for users (in the context of economic intelligence (EI), economic actors) that could assist them to add annotations to documents of interest. A user reads a document, either electronic or hard copy, for many reasons. One of such reasons is interpreting the document content. When used as a user’s interpretation of document content, annotation is regarded as value-added information. Document in this context is anything that serves as a source of information of interest to the user. The major formats of document are text, video, and images. Different users employ different annotation forms such as underlining an object of interest, writing on the margins, making a comment, and using some marks such as asterisk, question mark, and so on. Annotation may have explicit or implicit meaning. With explicit annotation, the intention of the annotation is explicitly made available to at least a community of users. Unlike explicit annotation, the intention of implicit annotation is known only to the annotator. This chapter focuses on the need to design and develop a model for creating annotations as value-added information in the EI process aimed toward decision problem resolution. The next section discusses the annotation concept.
