Abstract: The focus of this chapter is upon the acquired knowledge resources that a person must possess in order to communicate in an effective and appropriate manner. Following a general overview of various memory systems (e.g., declarative memory, procedural memory), a process-based approach to categorizing requisite knowledge types is introduced. More specifically, five broad process categories are developed: 1. message production and processing resources, 2. social coordination resources, 3. self-regulatory resources, 4. resources involved in the negotiation of “social reality”, and 5. resources involved in the pursuit of task goals.
