Abstract: Competent communication is influenced by so-called motivational states, defined as moment-by-moment changes in how arousal or energy is allocated to achieve personal goals. Often appearing as feelings, moods, or states, these varying levels of motivation are associated with constellations of traits that account for individual differences in thinking and action.
