Foreword

I was talking to a group of nonprofit leaders—it was right after lunch, the time slot that every speaker dreads. (You should never try to compete with digestion.) Near the edge of the room, I saw an older gentleman with his arms crossed, eyes closed, and mouth agape—a hair’s breadth away from a snore. I couldn’t help but smile. (I can appreciate the value of a nap, even at my expense.)

But then I saw a second person whose eyes were drooping. My smile began to fade. Next the phones started surfacing. Popping up like prairie dogs all around the room. Maybe they were eager to tweet my speakerly wisdom? Sadly, no. I’d lost them. Soon I found myself talking to a room full of foreheads, wondering how I could earn back their attention.
