Abstract

This glossary gives brief descriptions for a selection of specific key terms and phrases that appear throughout the book and are commonly used in the commercial data mining field.

business objective A goal or purpose that is determined prior to a data mining analysis. Before commencing a data analysis project, a clear idea is needed of the end objectives of the analysis, the viability of the project, the estimate of the project’s cost and benefit, and how the quality of the results will be measured. Two examples of business objectives are to “reduce customer cancellations by 3 percent during the next year,” and to “increase the profit margin for marketing campaigns by 25 percent.”
