Preliminary design

The preliminary design of a commercial aircraft is a feasibility study aimed at determining whether or not a conceptual aircraft is worthy of detailed design study. Only six statements are needed to define the mission specification and initiate a preliminary design study for a civil aircraft: type (private, business, or commercial), powerplant (reciprocating, turboprop, or turbofan), passenger capacity, cruise speed, cruise altitude, and maximum range in cruise.
