Engine Selection

Abstract

Gross size and weight characteristics estimated in previous chapters are used to select engines for the proposed aircraft. An introduction to landing requirements is presented after which landing wing loading and the effects of landing field length constraints are determined. Similar attention is paid to takeoff wing loading limitations in terms of takeoff distance. Constraints posed by the need for economical cruise are factored into the design process. These factors influencing the design are then combined into a single engine selection design chart. High-bypass turbofan engines and turboprop engines are discussed.
