Summary

Load balancing can solve many of the problems with enterprise applications. It provides scalability, availability, and flexibility. Load balancing should not require any change in the program model, so well-designed components are ready for load balancing out of the gate.

Unfortunately, Windows 2000 has not shipped with the load-balancing service. This is because Microsoft could not address all the issues surrounding load balancing before the shipment of Windows 2000. AppCenter Server will have the load-balancing service and will make load balancing more of an administrative task than anything. Until then, you'll have to rely on your own resources as you have in previous enterprise development.
