Chapter 2. What Are Collaborative Cultures?

To better understand what collaboration looks like in our software development daily work, it’s worth comparing a collaborative mode of working to other modes we might choose instead. If we think of these general organizational working modes as cultures, we can look at the descriptions and comparisons established by William Schneider in his book The Reengineering Alternative: A Plan for Making Your Current Culture Work. In this study, Schneider describes four fundamental cultures of working—that is, how teams make decisions and how their managers guide those decisions:
