To place this volume in historical perspective, I revisited two early compilations on the subject of learning and instruction: Training Research and Education (Glaser, 1962/1965), as well as David Klahr's original Cognition and Instruction (Klahr, 1976). My book resulted from a conference sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) involving experimental psychologists interested in problems of training and the underlying phenomena of learning. Before this time, many psychologists had conducted research on training, and the goal of this conference was to examine what the work could bring to education more generally.
