On the face of it, building software is easy if you have the right tools. But you have to know how to use the tools properly. The quality of your build system is paramount; without a safe, reliable build process, you can’t realistically develop solid code. Producing trustworthy release builds for production is an even more involved matter—it requires a thorough approach and a well-defined procedure. It is important to have an understanding of what’s going on when you fire off a build, even if you don’t have to alter the build system every day.
