Let me give you an example of the ways in which negative beliefs can disempower you. I coached several people over the past few years who came to me in what we politely call a “transition” phase—they had been laid off and were looking for a new job. One young woman in particular was really stuck; she was quite smart, had graduated from a great school, had all the right credentials, and had worked for a couple of good companies. But once she got laid off, her insecurities ran rampant. This is not that unusual, but this young woman had the opportunity to conquer the world in any way she wanted.
