In most of today’s companies, the emphasis is on flattening the organization and placing leaders at every level. Leaders in flattened organizations must be able to get people to work toward goals without anyone holding formal authority. This calls for influencing, and you can’t influence people if you don’t know how to communicate effectively with them. The more accurately you hear others, the more you understand their viewpoints, their interpretation of events, and the way they make meaning out of situations.
