Leadership and Parenting:The Same Skill Set

People who demonstrate relational competence are concerned about their own growth and success, but they go one step further: They actually gauge their success by the growth of others. When talking about the relational competence and emotional intelligence critical to integrated leadership, I often use the metaphor of “parenting.” Effective parenting means nurturing your children, setting boundaries, giving them guidance and support, clarifying expectations and responsibilities, allowing them to make mistakes, and holding them accountable. Your “success” as a parent is determined by your ability to help your kids grow into emotionally well-adjusted, responsible, productive, loving adults.
