Great coaching leaves people feeling curious about their lives and with a sense of space to breathe. Often clients arrive frazzled, anxious and confused and leave feeling light and energised once more. The art of coaching lies more in the way coaches are being in the relationship rather than in what coaches are doing. Your behaviour acts as a model for your clients to emulate. A coach who is positive, calm, clear and fully concentrating in the moment with rapport (being) is better than one who can demonstrate a specific coaching tool or NLP technique (doing).

In this section I look at some of the extra qualities that coaches bring to the client-coach alliance that make this relationship so special.

Feeling the power of silence

A fast-paced world leaves few opportunities to savour silence; a challenge that contributes to the frazzled experiences of many corporate executives. In the silent spaces of coaching sessions, clients can access their real power, presence and passion. This silence allows them to retrieve what they've lost deep in themselves. Silence takes clients into a space of self-reflection, where different perspectives lay waiting for them to uncover. Here they achieve leaps in awareness, which in turn leads to positive change.
