Assessing the learning needs of coaches should be carried out in a thoughtful, sensitive, and involving manner. Here are some tips, based on many years of experience.

  • Go directly to the source. Trainers often solicit information about the learning needs of coaches from their managers. The flaws in this practice are, first, that the managers may not observe the coaching directly and; second, if their managers are the sole source of data about their learning needs, the coaches may not feel involved in any meaningful way.
