Tools You Will Need

Following are a number of tools that you may find useful while reading this book:

  • Putty — This is an SSH client used to connect to servers.
  • FileZilla — This is an FTP client used to connect to websites and servers.
  • WireShark — This is a packet sniffer used for troubleshooting.
  • Nmap — This is a network mapping tool used for troubleshooting and for reconnaissance (among other things).
  • Nessus — This is a vulnerability scanner.
  • Notepad ++ — This is a Windows-based text editor that has superior features to the default text editor.

These tools are readily downloadable from the Internet for free. Some of them (such as Nessus) offer a professional support package.
