Online Accessibility

Networks are the key enabler for the other characteristics we’ve specified, such as common resources and location independence. Without networks, there could be no sharing (i.e., common resources) and thus no statistical multiplexing, no location independence, no on-demand resources, and therefore limited or no value creation via the cloud. Networks must be available and secure and have the capacity to enable interactions between endpoints and cloud services that create business value. Backups wouldn’t work without networks; file sharing wouldn’t work without networks; social networks wouldn’t work without physical networks; access to remote on-demand capacity wouldn’t work, and local on-demand capacity doesn’t have a compelling business model.

Without networks, there is no cloud.
