PaaS offerings are convenient, but they can’t always handle the requirements of an application’s ecosystem. If your organization has a standing data center, convincing the product owner that the best option for deployment is PaaS in the cloud probably won’t fly. Similarly, many organizations maintaining sensitive data tend to avoid deployment on public hardware. If you’ve designed an application that’s highly concurrent, the available cloud offerings may not provide you with enough cores. Many, many circumstances exist in which we may need or prefer to configure our own platform.
