As people move further and further from more natural diets and toward more processed ones, the debate over wellness has centered on what effect an energy-dense diet has had on people's long- and short-term health compared to a nutrient-dense diet. Well, the results are in: People who eat an energy-dense diet instead of a nutrient-dense diet have an increased risk of developing obesity-related diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, some cancers, and more.

In this chapter I present some superfoods that can combat the effects of the more-processed diet. These foods are nutrient packed and can improve your health and your sense of wellness if you eat them regularly as part of a healthy diet.

Packed with fiber, beans are little power pills that are great for your heart. Fiber helps excrete excess cholesterol out of your body, thus lowering your risk of heart disease. Beans are also packed with protein and come in hundreds of different varieties. Be creative and try them all. Just don't eat too much, because they can cause a lot of gas! You've been warned.
