Builders cut back to a few hundred housing starts each month in a metropolitan area that had demanded thousands of new homes in the past. All the trades, from carpenters to drywall installers, began to close down, move away, or search for remodeling work (which had diminished as well).

This contraction of the real estate activity was felt throughout the Arizona economy. No one was spared.
