Greener Pastures

“What I’d really like to do is to direct,” says the actor. “I’m just doing home inspections until drywall demand comes back,” says the workman. “I’m just driving a cab until I finish night school for accounting,” says the woman behind the wheel. Everywhere I look, people are looking to better themselves or hoping to find greener grass just beyond the fence. Some do a good job in their current endeavors and some don’t. The ones doing a good job now will probably go on to do well in the future. The ones who don’t do a good job currently truly believe that going to that next big thing is going to change how they feel about what they do—and that when that happens, they will somehow be transformed and become very good at whatever it is, because they will finally be doing what they love. Don’t bet your life savings on it. These hopefuls will more likely find fault with their newly realized dream and begin talking about what they really want to do all over again.

Until they love what they do now, they will never love what they do when they land that dream job. Clients First is not something you will practice only when you get to management or become CEO. Clients First is something you do today, whether you are selling a pair of socks, installing brake pads while working on an assembly line, or cleaning a hospital room. Love what you do.
