Choice, No Choice

Confucius didn’t say “do what you love,” although given the choice, you should choose something you like to do. Instead, that wise man said you should “love what you do.” We don’t always have a choice. But we can choose how we deal with what we have to do. Choose pride in your work.

The second key to Clients First, competence and getting good at what you do, comes from letting the work be the reward. Clients First keeps you focused on the work. With Clients First, you forget about the money. You forget about the time. You don’t care about the perks. You care about doing the job and doing the job right for your client. In real estate, JoAnn and I found a vocation we loved. Clients First made the work itself rewarding.

Step number eight on the path to Clients First may change your life. Clients First makes you question whether you love what you do. Unless you are willing to be the best at what you do, you aren’t putting your Clients First, and if you go through your life doing something in which you cannot find enjoyment, you will be miserable. Clients First requires that you choose to let the work be the reward.
