Let the Work Be the Reward
On JoAnn’s desk are a number of little reminders and memories precious to her. One that she has had for a long time is a saying credited to Confucius: “Love what you do and you will never work another day in your life.”
A million years ago, when we were very young and our girls were all in elementary school, we found ourselves in a new part of town with enough money for the first month’s rent on a little house and about a week’s worth of groceries. We didn’t have a car. My most pressing concern was health insurance for our family of five, so when I looked in the newspaper for a job, I needed one within walking distance and with benefits from day one. There it was. The local hospital needed housekeeping help. I applied and started the next evening.
