Step 7

Trust the Truth

Looking back on the past dozen years since we changed, since Clients First changed us, I am at a loss to explain our honesty now compared to then. We felt honest back then. If someone were to question our honesty, our reaction would have been the same as yours. “Of course we are honest. How can you even ask?” But today, as difficult as it might be to explain, I know there is a difference. We are not the same. Today, we put our Clients First. Today, we trust the truth.

Trust is a powerful concept. That we can place our faith in another human being, in an idea, or even in things is a wonderful assurance. We put our trust in our parents, our life partner, and our children. We trust our government, our principles, and our ideals. We trust our tools to get the job done, and we trust a McDonald’s in Spokane to deliver the same Big Mac as a McDonald’s in Miami Beach. It is good to trust.

Trust brings us joy. Trust makes us feel safe. We want to trust. We need to trust our environment and the people around us.

But what happens when a trust is broken? The betrayal by another is a pain so great it seems impossible to bear. When we feel let down by our institutions, or even our favorite tire store, our disappointment can be overwhelming. This hurtful potential makes us cautious, and in the end our trust is reduced to a question: Dare we trust?
