Chapter 27

Step 4

Get Yourself Out of the Way

Just ask our kids whether JoAnn and I are competitive, but make sure they don’t have a mouthful of food when you do. We were driven, obsessive, compulsive, and just about every other adjective that might define successful people. Still, for all our passion to succeed, we were just as unsuccessful, just as stuck, as our lady in blue at the Mustang Library. At 50 years of age, we didn’t have money. Our history was full of ups followed by downs. We had memories that were dear to us, but halfway through our lives we were still where we started.

Our egos controlled us instead of us controlling our egos. We were driven to win for the sake of winning. We wanted success, respect, adulation, and even the envy of our peers. We thought people would care if we achieved. We sought recognition. We were very much in our own way.
