Chapter 29. lsof

Judging by the size of its man page, lsof—a cousin of ls—is one of the most complex commands available to a Linux user. But don’t worry, we’re going to keep this simple.

As a rule, I recommend that you read the man or info pages for the topic at hand. Not this time. This time I’m going to recommend that you use the -h option with lsof instead of man or info.

This is a better way to get your foot in the door with lsof. Why? Because it produces a cheat sheet like this that you can use whenever needed:

lsof -h
lsof 4.74
