Our research has been led by the idea that leadership is a relationship between leader and led. It was this that stimulated our sociological interest. This, we believe, is the nexus of how people behave in organizations, of how people understand and practice leadership.

It is as bare and challenging as that. How best can we understand and maximize this relationship?

This has long been the simple focus of our interest and research. In our previous book, Why Should Anyone Be Led By You?, we looked at both sides of the equation. Along the way, we talked to many followers as well as leaders in a wide range of organizations, industries, and institutions.
