When I interviewed Seth Godin, the noted marketing expert and CEO of Squidoo, for this chapter, he boiled the intricate, mysterious riddle of how to build readership into five words:

Voice plus reputation equals readership.

For good or ill, it's going to take me a few thousand times that many words to lightly cover some of the things you can do to build readership of your public blog. But hang in there—those five words are the beacon to guide you as you climb the influence hill in your part of the blogosphere.
