9.3. Generator Types in the Wind Energy Conversion Systems

The different types of electric generators used in WECSs are presented in Fig. 9.19.
A WECS can be operated at fixed speed or variable speed depending on the configuration of the wind turbine. The main benefits of both configurations are summarized as folows:
Fixed speed operation: (1) simple electric system, (2) greater reliability, (3) low probability of the excitation of resonant frequencies of wind turbine elements, (4) no need for power electronics system, and (5) low cost.
