9.2. Wind Turbine Technologies

Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical energy which is then converted to electrical energy. The main components of a modern horizontal-axis wind turbine (HAWTs) are shown in Fig. 9.4. The wind measurement system (anemometer) monitors the wind speed and transfers the measurements to the control panel. The angle of the blade is controlled to maximize the aerodynamic efficiency of the wind turbine and limit the load on mechanical transmission in strong wind conditions.
