New WLAN Deployments

WLAN designs are newly installed in a variety of areas within home, enterprise, and service provider networks. Two basic options are available for securing a new WLAN: embedded media solutions, such as WPA, and tunneling overlays, such as IPSec and SSL. The following sections discuss these two security frameworks and how to combine these technologies for a highly secure solution. The sections discuss how the security framework functions and compare how the security framework mitigates the threats identified in Chapter 5, “WLAN Basic Authentication and Privacy Methods.” Finally, they discuss the impact that the security framework might have on WLAN design fundamentals.
