Other network troubleshooting tools are available on the Web as well as those mentioned here. There are Web interfaces for whois (a utility for getting contact information from IP networks that are assigned by ARIN), nslookup (a utility to query a DNS server for the IP address or text name of an IP host), and dig (Domain Information Groper, a utility to interrogate a DNS server for IP domain name information).

Whois is used to query a remote server for database information. Two public whois servers used by ISPs are whois.ra.net and whois.arin.net. The command syntax is whois –h <server> <query object>. Table 12.2 shows what kind of information is available from each server.
