How to Collect the Data

There are certainly more methods for collecting SNMP data from network devices than I list here. No matter which application you use to collect your data, the underlying principles are the same. The data is pulled from the MIB variables and then stored or displayed in some fashion. Several commercially available applications enable you to collect data and might even provide reports on the data that is collected, such as the OpenView package by Hewlett-Packard. For our discussion here, we will concentrate on home grown or freely available SNMP collection utilities.
