Dealing with Congestion

Congestion on network interfaces is the nightmare that all Network Operators hope they never have to face. If the routers on your network are configured properly, a pseudo early detection system can alert you when traffic levels reach certain "danger points." Chapter 9, "Collecting Data via SNMP," and Chapter 10 cover the most efficient ways to monitor the traffic levels on your routers.

The default queuing mechanism in the Cisco IOS is first in, first out (FIFO). There are several other configuration options available in the Cisco IOS that can help you to avoid congestion on your network.
