Multicast Backbone (Mbone)

The Multicast Backbone (Mbone) began as a tunnel between the original BBN backbone (now known as GTE Internetworking) and Stanford University in 1988. A tunnel was used as a temporary solution until routers learned how to deal with multicast traffic. The Mbone evolved as more and more networks interconnected with the purpose of exchanging multicast traffic. DVMRP was the original multicast routing protocol used on Mbone. In fact, it is still in use today. Cisco routers do not support DVMRP directly. However, Cisco multicast routers using PIM can interoperate with non-Cisco multicast routers that use DVMRP.
