Multicast Routing Protocols

There are several different protocols used in a multicast system to complete communication between a sender and a multicast group. The Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) handles the communication between multicast hosts and the router that connects them to other networks. The router uses the IGMP message to maintain a table of which hosts are joined to which multicast groups. Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) is used to share information between multicast enabled routers. The Distance Vector Multicast Routing Protocol (DVMRP) is used on the original multicast backbone and is not supported by Cisco.
