How Multicast Works

Multicast sources sdata packets to multicast groups. There can be any number of clients within a group. In fact, multicast group membership changes constantly. Multicast systems use Class D Internet Protocol (IP) address space. The four high order bits of the first octet of Class D IP address space are 1110. This gives the Class D IP address space a range of 224.0.0.0–239.255.255.255.

There are three modes of communication within any multicast system.

  • Host to many receivers

  • Many groups to one host

  • Many sources to many multicast groups
