Leased Lines

Leased lines can be purchased as small as 56Kbps and as large as 2.4Gbps or higher. Usually leased lines are purchased at T1 rate or higher because of their cost. It is much cheaper to have a switched 56Kbps circuit than a dedicated 56Kbps leased line. Cisco supports a number of encapsulation types for their available WAN interfaces. The two most commonly used are the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) and High-level Data Link Control (HDLC) protocol.

Cisco also supports the use of the following encapsulation types on its synchronous serial interfaces:

  • Frame Relay

  • SMDS

  • X.25

  • Synchronous Datalink Control (SDLC)

  • ATM Data Exchange Interface (ATM-DXI)

  • Cisco's Serial Tunneling (STUN)
