Internetworking Operating System (IOS)

All the routers mentioned in this book run a version of the Cisco Internetworking Operating System (IOS). The current mainstream version of the IOS is Release 11. Release 12, which was just recently made available, has not yet made its way into widespread use. However, as time goes on and Network Operators become more comfortable with the stability of Release 12, it will undoubtedly become the IOS of choice for high-users.

Each release of the Cisco IOS is classified by its intended audience. Three main classifications exist:

  • The first classification is General Deployment. This code is intended for use by all Cisco customers. It is believed to be very stable and free of any significant bugs.
