VLANs, VPNs and Converged Network Services

Virtual local area networks (Virtual LANs or VLANs) are a relatively new beast in the networking world. The idea is basically to have many individual networks connected to a single layer 2 or layer 3 enabled switch. Each port on this switch can be configured to be its own virtual network. This means that broadcast traffic on a single port is only propagated to other ports on the switch that are configured for the same VLAN identifier. The implementation of VLANs allows Network Operators to control the broadcast traffic on the switch and prevent it from impacting other users or customers on their switch that might not be interested in that traffic.
