Hubs, Bridges, and Switches

I will not sptoo much time on the first three terms of this section because there's a good chance you are familiar with them anyway. Hubs are basically denoted as an Ethernet data link layer device that connects point-to-point physical layer links, such as twisted pair or fiber optic cabling into a single shared media network. Bridges and switches both operate under the data link layer. A bridge is a network device which helps connect multiple data link layer network segments into a single logical network segment. There are different types of bridges:

  • Transparent or learning

  • Encapsulation

  • Translational

  • Source-route

  • Source-route translational
