About the Instructors

David Jansen, CCIE No. 5952 (Routing/Switching), is a Distinguished Systems Engineer (DSE) for Cisco specializing in Data Center architectures. He has 20 years of experience in the industry and has held certifications from Novell, VMware, Microsoft, TOGAF, and Cisco. His focus is working with global enterprise customers to address their challenges with comprehensive end-to-end Data Center, Enterprise, WAN/Internet architectures. David has been with Cisco for 18 years, and working as a Distinguished Systems Engineer (DSE) for more than 3 years has provided him with unique experiences in building these types of solutions. David has a bachelor's degree in computer science engineering from the University of Michigan and a master's degree in adult education from Central Michigan University.

Lukas Krattiger, CCIE No. 21921 (Routing and Switching/Data Center), is a Technical Marketing Engineer (TME) with more than 15 years of experience in Data Center-, Internet- and Application-Networks. Within the Cisco Enterprise Infrastructure and Solutions Group (EISG), he specializes in Data Center switching architectures and solutions across platforms. Lukas is a double-CCIE (R&S, Data Center) with several other industry certifications (VCP, MCSE) and has participated in various technology leadership and advisory groups. Prior to joining Cisco, Lukas was a Senior Network Engineer at System Integrators and Service Providers responsible for Data Center and Internet networks. Since joining Cisco, he has covered various technologies within the Data Center as well as Borderless Networks portfolio, and built foundational solutions for customers and partners. Current projects include innovative approaches for automating Data Center Network (Openstack and Cisco UCS Director) and Optimized Networking with Overlays (FabricPath and VXLAN). Course Requirements

The students should be intermediate to expert. These LiveLessons assume common knowledge of Cisco IOS and network switching and routing theory. The typical student would have at least a CCNA certification and would be responsible for the configuration and day-to-day operations of networks.

Lesson 1: Introduction to Programmable Fabric

Lesson 1 covers today's Data Center challenges, the Data Center network evolution, an overview of the Programmable Fabric and the road to an Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI). This lesson also touches base on the Fabric roles and terminologies, its properties, and end-host connectivity options.

Lesson 2: Introducing Programmable Fabric (VXLAN/EVPN)

Lesson 2 introduces the Virtual eXtensible LAN (VXLAN) and what we are doing with the Segment ID. This lesson features a walkthrough of the BGP-EVPN control-plane and highlights how end-hosts and networks are distributed among the control-plane. Host detection, deletion, and move are also part of this lesson.

Lesson 3: Programmable Fabric Forwarding

Lesson 3 reviews the forwarding concept of the Programmable Fabric. The lesson explains how both multidestination traffic and ARP are handled. Further, the lesson provides a detailed look at integrated routing and bridging and how distributed routing works with an IP Anycast Gateway.

Lesson 4: The Underlay

Lesson 4 focuses on the IP Underlay Network. The lesson begins with a discussion of underlay and IP addressing considerations, and continues with examples of unicast and multicast routing. The lesson concludes with multicast-related deployment details.

Lesson 5: Unicast Forwarding

Lesson 5 is all about unicast forwarding with VXLAN and BGP-EVPN. We go through the general unicast forwarding concepts and look at inter- and intra-subnet forwarding. The lesson concludes with details about forwarding with Dual-Homed End-Point (vPC), as well as IPv6 handling.

Lesson 6: Multitenancy

Lesson 6 covers multitenancy in greater detail. In addition to the basic foundations of multitenancy, this lesson explains the Layer 2 and 3 modes of operations, as well as per-port VLAN significance.

Lesson 7: Multicast Forwarding

Lesson 7 introduces multicast forwarding in general and illustrates how Layer 2 multicast works with and without vPC.

Lesson 8: External Connectivity

Lesson 8 discusses the basics of external connectivity, beginning with a review of various connectivity options including vPC, VRF-lite, LISP, and MPLS. The lesson concludes with a discussion of inter-Fabric connectivity.

Lesson 9: Layer 4-7 Services Integration

Lesson 9 covers Layer 4-7 services integration topics including firewalls and load balancers. The lesson reviews how tenant-edge and intra-tenant firewalls are deployed, and how load balancing and service chaining can be integrated.

Lesson 10: Introducing Programmable Fabric Management, Operations, and Provisioning

Lesson 10 begins with a review of implementing Device Auto-Configuration (POAP). The lesson continues with a review of performing a cable plan consistency check and how to implement common point of fabric management. The lesson concludes with a treatment of topology, tenant, and overlay provisioning.
