Understanding Advanced Switch Functions
Creating VLANs is not required for a Cisco switch to operate. By default, all ports on the switch are in the same VLAN and are set to access mode rather than trunk mode. As long as all of the hosts connected to the switch are configured with the IP address of the router interface to which the switch is connected as their default gateway, everything should work just fine by plugging the hosts into the switch.
