Configuring Interfaces

After access to the router has been secured, the interfaces can be made functional. On a Cisco router, that requires two steps:

  • Configuring an IP address and subnet mask
  • Enabling the interface

Before those settings can be made, you must navigate to the mode that accepts and applies them. You also need to know how to verify that the settings were accepted and that the interface is functional. This section addresses all of those issues for both WAN and LAN interfaces. Finally, the configuration of a router to act as a DHCP server will be explained.
