Describing the Functions at the Internet Layer
While the protocols operating at the Transport layer are concerned with ensuring that the proper applications or services on the source and destination devices can locate one another, the protocols on the Internet layer are responsible for getting the packet labeled with source and destination IP addresses. Information provided on this layer is used for routing purposes. This Internet layer information is what routers are interested in as they make routing decisions.
