The OSI Model
When the benefits of networking computers first became apparent, one of the challenges of doing so was a lack of standardization among the makers of hardware and software. Most networking solutions of the time were proprietary in nature, making it difficult to mix computer solutions from different companies. To put it in the vernacular of the time, everyone was “doing their own thing.” While that was a popular slogan and approach to life at the time, it was not a good situation for networking.
